Opportunity Iceberg is an interactive learning and investigation tool that helps students, educators and practitioners explore complex industries, opportunities, technologies and organisational challenges.
Rather than examining a topic in isolation, the tool encourages users to investigate the broader system of visible and hidden influences surrounding it.
Why Opportunity Iceberg was created
Complex problems rarely have a single cause or an obvious solution. A new technology may depend on leadership, skills, trust, regulation and organisational culture. A market opportunity may be influenced by customer behaviour, economic conditions, sustainability expectations and emerging competitors.
Opportunity Iceberg provides a visual environment in which users can explore relationships, identify overlooked influences, question assumptions and develop better research questions before proposing solutions.
How it works
1 Select an Area of Interest Begin with a broad field and review the visible and hidden influences it brings into view.
2 Find a Specific Topic Search the connected library to reveal an explanation, significance, signals, questions and related influences.
3 Create your own exploration Construct a personalised topic, combine curated and original influences, explain the relationships and revise the map as understanding develops.
Visible and hidden influences
Visible influences Factors that are comparatively easy to recognise, observe or discuss, such as technologies, products, strategies, policies, customer behaviours or public events.
Hidden influences Factors that may be less obvious but strongly affect outcomes, such as assumptions, capabilities, trust, culture, incentives, power, ethics or stakeholder experiences.
These classifications are starting points rather than permanent truths. An influence that is visible in one investigation may be hidden in another or may appear differently from another stakeholder’s perspective.
The value of the tool
Opportunity Iceberg supports systems thinking, critical thinking, strategic awareness, opportunity recognition, stakeholder awareness, evidence evaluation, responsible decision-making and reflective learning.
It can support individual investigations, classroom discussions, workshops, research activities, opportunity analysis, strategic planning and project development.
A tool for inquiry—not an answer generator
The tool does not determine the correct interpretation of a problem. It provides a structured environment for exploring possibilities and developing better questions. The presence of a connection does not prove causation, importance or agreement; relationships should be treated as prompts for investigation.
Curated and user-created content
OpenStudios curated content provides educational starting points across management, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, society and related disciplines. It should still be examined critically and supported with appropriate evidence.
User-created content is constructed by the student and is not reviewed or validated OpenStudios content. Personalised relationships should be treated as hypotheses, tested with credible evidence and revised when new information becomes available.
Suggested investigation process
Select an Area of Interest or Specific Topic.
Review the visible and hidden influences.
Choose the relationships that appear most consequential.
Identify the assumptions underlying those relationships.
Determine what evidence is available and what remains unknown.
Consider stakeholders and perspectives that may be missing.
Investigate alternative explanations.
Revise the exploration as new evidence emerges.
Record the implications for decisions or future action.
Save or export the exploration for discussion or assessment.
Saving and privacy
Progress and recent exploration history are stored on the user’s device. Personalised work should be saved or exported before browser data is cleared or work moves to another device.
About the project
Opportunity Iceberg is part of the independently developed OpenStudios Innovation Platform, a collection of educational tools designed to make strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, design and emerging-technology practices more accessible.
The project continues to develop through use, feedback and the generosity of individuals who support its ongoing creation.
